The holidays are a time to make special memories with your family and loved ones. From craft shows and unique wintertime events to colorful Christmas displays, we’ve got the list of the best holiday events to attend in and around Youngstown!

Youngstown Holiday Parade Light-Up Night & Flea on Phelps

It’s time once again for the best holiday parade around! Come to Youngstown’s Central Square to be part of the holiday magic for 2022’s Holiday Parade Light-Up Night & Flea on Phelps (a special edition of the Youngstown Flea). 

Activities begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, December 2, starting with the amazing vendors at the Flea on Phelps (a holiday flea market located on the Phelps Street Gateway). The Parade starts at 6 p.m., and the Christmas Tree Lighting will commence just after the parade, between 7:15 and 7:30 p.m. 

Visitors can get pictures with Santa and stop by participating downtown restaurants to experience the holiday cheer! For more information, contact Youngstown CityScape at 330-742-4040.

The American Holiday Arts and Crafts Show

Every year, The Butler Institute of American Art holds its annual holiday arts and crafts show, which helps support the museum’s free admission and art outreach programs. Come and see an unbelievable selection of handmade gifts – art pieces like paintings and sculptures, glass and jewelry, and even baked goods and treats! There will also be a chance auction where participants can win art donated by the show’s participating artists.   

Don’t forget to stop into the Butler Museum Store and the Fine Art Sales Gallery while you’re there for even more shopping! For more information, check the Butler Institute’s website. 

Admission for adults is $5, with kids 12 and under admitted free. The Butler Arts & Crafts Show will be held on Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, December 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Memories of Christmas Past

Experience the joy of Christmas past at the Arms Family Museum, just north of downtown Youngstown. For the past fourteen years, the museum has embraced the holiday season by decorating its seven period rooms in vintage Christmas décor. Come and celebrate old fashioned American holiday traditions!

The exhibit will be on display from November 19 – December 31, 2022. The Arms Family Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., and Thursdays from 12 p.m. – 7p.m. There will be special hours on Monday, December 26 from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday, December 31 from 12 p.m. – 7 p.m. The Arms Family Museum is closed on all other Mondays during the year, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

Olde Fashioned Christmas at the Mill

All year round, visitors from all over Mahoning County and northeast Ohio enjoy what Mill Creek MetroParks has to offer. But during the holidays, the park becomes even more special. 

Visit Lanterman’s Mill at Mill Creek MetroParks for an Olde Fashioned Christmas at the Mill! There will be holiday treats like fire roasted chestnuts, as well as handmade arts and crafts and entertainment to get you into that Christmas mood. Plus, Santa will be sure to pay a visit, too! If you can, bring a new hat, scarf, or mittens to help decorate the “Giving Tree,” which will help those less fortunate throughout the Mahoning Valley. 

The event is on two days: Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Winter Celebration: Festival of Trees and Winter Nights – Fellows Riverside Gardens

 

It’s a winter wonderland at Fellows Riverside Gardens – your chance to enjoy Winter Celebration: Festival of Trees and Winter Nights! 

Winter Celebration

The D.D. and Velma Davis Education and Visitor Center will be fully decked out in its annual holiday display, with over 60 Christmas trees fully decorated by local nonprofit groups. Don’t miss this beautiful Christmas display! 

Winter Celebration runs December 3-31, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Mondays and Christmas Day.

Winter Nights

You can experience the outdoor light display on a crisp winter night as part of the Fellows Riverside Gardens Winter Nights event. Check the Mill Creek MetroParks website for more information.

Disney on Ice

Pack up the little ones and discover the magic of Disney on Ice! You don’t have to go all the way to Pittsburgh or Cleveland to make extra special memories, because the experience takes place right here in Youngstown! Come early for the Disney character experience, where you can get a photo opportunity with Belle and Mickey Mouse! And be sure to take part in the dance party and crafting areas for the kiddos. 

There are seven shows scheduled from December 8 through December 11 at the Covelli Centre, so there’s plenty of opportunity to join in the fun!

Trans-Siberian Orchestra at Covelli Centre 

It wouldn’t be the holidays without The Trans-Siberian Orchestra bringing their rock-opera style to northeast Ohio! 

Two performances are set to take place at the Covelli Centre on November 20, at 3 p.m. and then again at 8 p.m. Even better, ticket sales also benefit a good cause; at least $1 from every ticket sale will go to The Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley and Sight for All United. Get your tickets through the Covelli Centre before they sell out!

The Nutcracker at DeYor Performing Arts Center

The Ballet Western Reserve returns to the DeYor Performing Arts Center for the beloved holiday classic, The Nutcracker. The performance is accompanied by a live orchestra and features over eighty students of the Ballet Western Reserve. It’s sure to transport you back in time to Christmases gone by!

Miracle on Easy Street at DeYor Performing Arts Center

Easy Street Productions returns to the DeYor Performing Arts Center for a holiday spectacular, and with live performances halted in 2020 and 2021, Miracle on Easy Street is back and bigger than ever! 

The show features live music and over 100 singers and dancers assembled from studios all over the Mahoning Valley! 

Performances are Friday, December 16 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, December 17 at 7:30 p.m.,  and Sunday, December 18 at 2:30 p.m. Visit the DeYor Performing Arts Center website for tickets and additional show information.

Elegant Illusions Christmas Lights Drive-Through

Get ready for the ultimate LED Christmas light display at the Canfield Fairgrounds! There will be over fifty holiday scenes, including the latest in animatronic technology! You can also stop at the Christmas Village to visit with Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and The Grinch – and pose for a photo! Getting your ticket is easy. Simply visit the Elegant Christmas Lighting website or stop at ticket booth #9 at the Canfield Fairgrounds. 

Event hours are Thursday through Sunday, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. It opens November 17 and ends January 1, 2023. Ticket prices are as follows: Cars/Trucks/SUVs/Vans – $25, Limo/Party Buses  – $50, and Tour Buses – $75.

Joy of Christmas Light Show

If you take a short drive south, Columbiana’s Joy of Christmas light display is one for the books. Featuring more than one million lights on more than 80 outdoor displays, this drive-through experience at Firestone Park is fun for the whole family! In addition to the light displays, visitors can stop at the Gingerbread House and Santa’s Ice Castle to drink some hot cocoa and visit with Santa himself!

The Joy of Christmas light show runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, starting November 17 (and ending December 31).
